About

Clare has worked for many years in the field of Ceramics following an MA in Cardiff, Wales in the late 1990s. Previous to this she studied Fine Art and English - both subjects having a direct influence on her ceramics, with strong elements of drawing, painting and narrative seen in her series of work.

The clay mediums she uses are diverse. She began with paper clays which guaranteed strength with the details she required, then moved to porcelain which has its own unique strength and quality unlike any other clay. But, never satisfied to stay in one place in her making, she also now uses a heavier, gritty crank and sometimes other white stonewares, according to what suits her particular theme. Glazing is often if not always with underglazes which enable truer colours and a wide palette.

Due to this diversity with mediums and glazes, a real variety of work is created - mainly in small series, which come about from influences such as childhood stories, art, antique curiosities, flowers, plants and human spirit. The love of experimenting with aesthetics, ideas and the unpredictable process of using clay is the underpinning of Clare’s artistic practice..
